Breath in the Dark.

This book is a biography, and the setting is 1960's Manchester It gives an account of the harsh reality in being a child carer, At the tender age of six, Jane Hersey became the sole carer for her mother, who suffers from clinical depression, diabetes and eating disorders. Jane is a little girl, with great love for her mother, that shines throughout the book, trying to cope in impossible circumstances. Living in poverty, socially isolated, neglected and both physically and emotionally abused. It is impossible to read Jane Hersey's life story, and not empathise with her situation. The book is a powerful document, for all to often hidden social deprivation, that shames us all. .
