Penguin

Ben is given a toy penguin. Despite all Ben's efforts to make friends with his gift, Penguin says nothing and appears characterless. But the shocking behaviour of a passing lion prompts Penguin to show his true colours, and his love for Ben. This award-winning story is simply told with humour and is characterfully illustrated. It's great to read aloud. And the last few pages suddenly reveal Penguin's inner life - making this another good book for teaching 2-3 year olds how to think into other minds.

This is a really great choice

This is a really great choice, Kate. It can be a nice link in to talking about autism and aspergers, for instance with siblings. Ben has to work out how Penguin feels without the regular emotional cues, and we, in our turn, can relate to Ben's frustration (and love).

Very good on theory of mind

I agree with Kate Raworth's review - a really good book for developing theory of mind in young children.
