Another moving animation from the team who brought you the RSA Animate series. Dr Brené Brown is a research professor and best-selling author, who has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame. This short video reminds us that in order to properly empathise with another person, we must first get in touch with our own tender, vulnerable side (and perhaps most importantly, to resist the temptation to impose a 'silver-lining' on someone's troubles). A brief, witty and powerful reminder of the world-changing power of empathy.

Lovely animate!
A very effective short animate from the RSA, especially on the importance of not saying 'at least' in response. The animator has done great stuff here too.
Empathy V Sympathy
This is a great RSA Short from Brene Brown. Excellent on the distinction between empathy and sympathy - and very funny too.
To really understand her thinking on empathy, you also need to get a handle on her thinking on vulnerability and shame too. I've had a go at summarising five of her key ideas on these topics here, based on an interview I did with her at The School of Life in London.

Really nice cartoons. The Brene´s ideas help us to understand the diference between simpathy and empathy.
That simple, complicated thing
This is a great way to convey a simple, complicated idea: the difference between empathy and sympathy. I must admit that I never really thought of sympathy as being potentially toxic before seeing this, but it seems obvious now that it certainly can be under the right/wrong circumstances.
